2. Nacho’s lucky strike at San Mames, Matchday 37

Real Madrid had a decent chance to return to the driver’s seat on Matchday 37. Atletico Madrid were trailing to a goal by Osasuna’s Ante Budimir. And about the same time, Nacho’s lucky strike had put Real Madrid ahead against Athletic Club at San Mames.

Nacho knew nothing about the ball that was originally played for Karim Benzema. The Frenchman was in an offside position and left it for Nacho at the very last moment. The ball took a touch of the Spaniard and went into the net for a goal.

Atletico Madrid added two goals through Renan Lodi and Luis Suarez to continue handling the league’s destiny. But, Nacho’s lucky strike remains the goal that brought things down to the final matchday of the league. And, the way the Spaniard has played throughout the season, he deserved to get off the mark in the goals column.

1. Final Matchday Drama

The season has been an anxious watch and for all Madrid fans, it went down to the final matchday in the league, the only chance at not ending the season trophy-less. Though a very difficult task, every one of us believed that it was possible.

The hopes were elevated when Atletico Madrid went down to Valladolid in the 10th minute through an Oscar Plano finish. But not after too long, Pino struck at the 20th minute in the capital, and defending champions Real Madrid trailed now.

As it happened both teams from Madrid finally secured their wins. It was Luka Modric in the capital and a former Cule, Luis Suarez at Valladolid who scored the winners for their respective clubs. All players drained to the last drop of sweat lied on the ground as the final whistle was blown.

The whole city of Madrid was in tears, the Red and White part in tears of joy and the White part of it, in tears of a heroic fight gone to vain. As it happened, the Luis Suarez winner among the drama of the last day league fight remains the biggest defining moment of the season.
