Real Madrid are currently in the state of a transition following Zinedine Zidane’s resignation. The Frenchman’s decision to leave was certainly a tough pill to swallow for many supporters.
However, it’s only going to get worse this summer as many other fan-favourite players could be heading towards the exit door over the next few months.
The likes of Isco, Marcelo, Lucas Vazquez, Raphael Varane, and Sergio Ramos are tipped to make an exit this summer transfer window.
As for Marcelo, the Brazilian international was questioned by a journalist from El Chiringuito Tv on his future at the Spanish capital to which he replied:
"“Yes, of course I know what will happen with my future. You’ll find out soon whether I’ll leave or I’ll stay.- Marcelo’s statement via an interview with El Chiringuito"
What does Marcelo’s statement mean? Will he continue at Real Madrid?
In my opinion, the likelihood of Marcelo Jr continuing at Real Madrid next season seems improbable. Firstly, his rapid decline has been disheartening, to say the least, and at the age of 33-year, it’s unlikely that he could turn it around.
Every time Marcelo has stared in the past two seasons, Real have suffered. Due to his poor conditioning, it’s almost like playing a man short during defensive transitions as he generally gets caught out of position higher up the field.
Ferland Mendy has turned out to be a fantastic replacement for the Brazilian and has provided great stability due to his defensive work rate and prowess. On another note, Marcelo’s departure would free up a slot in the squad for Miguel Gutierrez to grow and develop into a better player.
The youngster has already shown his class in the first team with his sublime assist to Luka Modric. He could even potentially challenge Ferland Mendy to a spot in the starting eleven since the Frenchman is quite shaky in the final third.
Marcelo’s departure seems imminent and with just a year left on his contract, Los Blancos would prefer selling the 33-year-old for whatever little amount they possibly can get. For now, we’ll just have to wait for what Marcelo has to say about his future.
