1. RW Gareth Bale

Real Madrid cannot sell Gareth Bale for anything more than free. The economy is too rough, and Bale’s wages are too high. It is very likely Los Blancos won’t be able to sell Bale at all. They may have to resign themselves to one last season with the club legend, who makes 30 million euros. And it may not end in disaster, if Carlo Ancelotti can work his magic.

I still think that despite some of the optimism amongst fans regarding Bale’s future under Ancelotti, Real Madrid want to do everything in their power to find another destination for Bale. A return to Tottenham? Possible but not likely, in spite of his 11 Premier League goals.

The real issue with Bale is the salary. I don’t think Real Madrid can afford to give Mbappe the nearly 30 million euros he commands in addition to paying that same amount of money to Bale on the right wing. Worse yet, while Bale showed signs of life in 2020-2021, he is not going to worth anywhere near that kind of money.

A part of me wonders that Real can only make an Mbappe deal work financially if they can offload Bale’s wages, especially after investing in David Alaba as a free transfer. And therefore, Bale is No. 1 on my list of priorities to sell in order to sign Mbappe. Raphael Varane would make the most money on the transfer market, but Bale would relieve wage and roster space in an important way.
