After a trophyless 2020-21 season, Real Madrid will look to return to winning ways under new manager, Carlo Ancelotti. The former Everton man is expected to restore success at the club and compete for all three competitions next season.

However, to do so, Ancelotti needs a balanced side to rotate his squad when needed and provide rest to some of the veteran players for more important fixtures. On paper with every player fit, Real Madrid have an impressive team but there is still a need for recruitment in a few areas. In this article, I will discuss three key areas that require recruitment in order to add depth to the squad.

CENTER BACK

Real Madrid have officially announced the departure of Sergio Ramos after 16 years of service. Ramos’ absence next season will leave a huge void in the defence and it could get worse if Raphael Varane also leaves who has been linked with an exit as well.

Let’s assume that Varane follows the footsteps of his counterpart Ramos and the duo walk out together this summer transfer window. That leaves Carlo Ancelotti with David Alaba, Eder Militao and Nacho Fernandez as his first-team centre-back, making it an ugly situation to deal with.

If this is the case, Real Madrid will have to look in the transfer market for a proper replacement. Ramos’ departure has freed up a huge amount on the payroll and it should be used to sign a thorough replacement.

A few possible names that come to my mind are Aymeric Laporte, Jules Kounde, and Pau Torres. Laporte seems to be the ideal replacement in my opinion due to his age, experience in both La Liga and Premier League, passing ability, leadership qualities and is an overall solid defender in all aspects.

According to El Confidencial, Laporte is keen on returning to the city of Madrid and is open to the idea of signing for either Atletico or Real. Los Blancos should look no further in their quest to replace Ramos in Aymeric Laporte. Yes, Sergio Ramos is irreplaceable but the club still has to sign someone to fill in his position.
