3. Varane exhibited leadership, a trait Real Madrid craves

The appointment of Marcelo as the first choice captain is looming with questions all over. I get where this decision must have come from. Marcelo has been a true club servant, his contributions during his prime at Real Madrid must never go unrecognized. But, realistically, I don’t see Marcelo playing a lot many matches. Especially after how Miguel Gutierrez stepped up as his replacement.

The armband therefore may appear more on Karim Benzema’s arm and that means Real Madrid will need a huge leader figure at the back. Raphael Varane doesn’t traditionally wear the armband for France or Real Madrid, but even then he can often be seen arranging the backline and piloting responsibility at the back.

After losing Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane is the man who shows most promise to be the unsung leader of the White defenders. He along with someone like Alaba who brings loads of leadership experience can be monumental for Los Blancos. Honestly, writing this feels surreal, talking about anyone other than Sergio Ramos to step up as the leader of Real Madrid’s backline is ridiculous. But it is what it is.

Real Madrid needs to take care of several crucial things before the season commences. One of them would be to make sure they find a worthy general of the white pack of defenders. After the conviction I saw from Raphael Varane working alongside underperformers like Presnel Kimpembe, he would top my list for the responsibility and very well may be the biggest takeaway that Real Madrid should consider before taking a call on the Frenchman’s future with the club.
