Germany 2-1 Sweden, Group Stage, World Cup 2018

After a stuttering start to the World Cup 2018 campaign with a defeat against Mexico, Germany found themselves on the brink of early exit when they conceded against Sweden in the 32nd minute.

Germany responded with a leveler through Marco Reus early in the second half. After this, a string of German attacks followed. Reus, Kroos, Werner, Gomez, Mueller all tried their very best, but the ball simply wouldn’t go in. To make matters worse, Jerome Boateng was sent off in the 82nd minute.

As all the hopes for the Germans were deflating, they won a freekick on the left side of the pitch in the 94th minute. But the angle for a direct shot was way slim. With a moment of utter brilliance and presence of mind, Kroos passed the ball short to Reus, who returned it back for Kroos to hit the ball straight into the top right corner of the net.

This was a monumental goal, coming off in the 5th minute of injury time. The goal sent German fans and players into wild celebrations. Kroos’ goal was the latest winner ever scored in the World Cup.

Although the Germans were rescued from an early exit from the tournament, they disappointed in the next game. They lost to South Korea by 2-0 and finished last in their group, thereby getting eliminated from the tournament.

Nevertheless, the goal against Sweden would be looked back at as one of the best goals of Kroos’ career.
