Jose Mourinho recently took office as the new AS Roma manager. According to AS, Mourinho’s already started looking into signings for the transfer window and has shortlisted Marcelo of Real Madrid.

The former Tottenham Hotspur manager wants to reunite with his former player following Leonardo Spinazzola’s injury. The Italian left-back has suffered from a torn Achilles tendon and is expected to be out for a prolonged period. This means that Mourinho will require a back-up and he has looked no further than Marcelo, who is his first choice.

Should Real Madrid part ways with Marcelo this summer?

Yes, Real Madrid must part ways with Marcelo this summer transfer window.

First and foremost, his contract runs out in 2022. With less than a year left on his contract and his rapid decline, Los Blancos must part ways with Marcelo. It’s unlikely that Madrid are going to get many offers on the table for the Brazilian due to his age and sub-par performances in the past three seasons. On that note, Florentino Perez should accept whatever Roma has to offer, or the other option is to watch Marcelo leave for free next summer.

Apart from his contract, we have David Alaba, Ferland Mendy and Miguel Gutierrez as our left-back options. Marcelo’s departure would directly provide Miguel more chances in the first team and we’ve already witnessed his potential last season under Zinedine Zidane.

While Gutierrez can receive considerably more game time in Marcelo’s absence, Real Madrid now have a sturdy left-back who can effectively contribute in both halves of the pitch in David Alaba. The Austrian signed on a free transfer from Bayern Munich and is primarily a left-back.

He is a far better option than Mendy at left-back mainly due to his attacking prowess and ability on the ball in terms of dribbling, crossing and progressing higher up the field. If Raphael Varane does stay this season, then we can expect Carlo Ancelotti to play Alaba as the left-back while Varane and Eder Militao pair up as the centre-backs.

But if Varane leaves, then Ancelotti can use Alaba and Militao as the centre-backs with Mendy on the left-flank as the first choice and Miguel Gutierrez as the second choice. The need for Marcelo at Real Madrid is no longer there and maybe it is time for the legend himself to close his chapter at Madrid and move on.
