Carlo Ancelotti’s second tenure with Real Madrid officially kicked off yesterday at the Valdebebas. The former Everton manager was joined by Antonio Pintus for the first pre-season training of the 2021-22 season with just 13 players from the first team, as per AS. The players did not leave the training ground post-session and were ordered by Ancelotti to spend the night at the team’s residence itself to kick off tomorrow’s training session early.

Alvaro Odriozola is one of the many players who will try to impress Carlo over the next few weeks. The Spaniard has a bleak future at the club and is reportedly not part of the manager’s plans for the 2021-22 season and is in talks with AC Milan over a deal, per Marca.

The right-back position is a serious cause for concern that Ancelotti will look to address over the summer. Dani Carvajal, in my opinion, is undoubtedly one of the best right-backs in the world but that has not been the case since the 2017-18 season. Carvajal has been struggling with injuries ever since then and has not been at his best.

His backup Alvaro Odriozola has not done much justice either and is not part of Ancelotti’s plans for the season. Given the current situation at the right-back position, I firmly believe that Real Madrid must look into the possible signing of PSV’s Denzel Dumfries.

Real Madrid could use a right back who can boost the attack

The 25-year-old has been one of the very best performers in the Euro 2020, scoring two goals for the Netherlands in four appearances despite playing as a right-back. Frank de Boer used Dumfries as an inverted attacking right-back in his 3-5-2 formation, which saw the 25-year-old making darting runs into the box during attacking transitions.

The PSV right-back proved his worth on the biggest stage and is now considered to be a hot prospect in the transfer market. According to Goal.com, Dumfries is on the radar of several top clubs including Inter Milan and Bayern Munich, his coach also expects him to leave PSV this summer along with Donyell Malen after a fantastic campaign with the Netherlands.

Real Madrid must step into this transfer as Mino Raiola has already reportedly begun talks with Inter over a possible deal for his client. The right-flank at Madrid is anyway quite dead and it definitely requires an injection of pace and an attacking threat. Dumfries could be the one that Los Blancos require in their arsenal to improve the right-wing.

The 25-year-old had an impressive 2020-21 league campaign with PSV, scoring two goals and providing six assists in the league. All in all, he’s a star with a lot of potential and Madrid must keep close tabs on this upcoming sensation.
