Marcelo is an icon, an all-time legend at Real Madrid. He has provided some of the best moments in the clubs recent history and is adored by the fanbase. However, all stories must have an ending and Marcelo is seemingly at that point with his.

The now 33-year-old has become an increasingly bit-part player thanks to the emergence of Ferland Mendy and the decline of his own abilities. Gone are the days of Marcelo being the marauding attacking presence down the flank, the version we see now is a shell of what he once was.
With his overall influence declining and his ability to step-up when called upon, Marcelo has become a player often criticised. Which is a shame, for a player who has created such fond memories, seeing him become what he is can only be described as disappointing.

Over the past couple of seasons, the Brazilian has become increasingly injury prone, suffering 10 injuries across the last two seasons totalling 24 league games missed. Paired with his declining ability and the expiration of his contract next summer, Real would be better giving him a fitting farewell and making way for the next generation such as Miguel, who showed he is capable of stepping up for the first team.
