Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid 2.0 is up and running after the Italian conducted his first preseason training since being reappointed. There’s a lot at stake this season and the pressure has only mounted further on Ancelotti’s shoulder to deliver silverware following a trophyless campaign under Zinedine Zidane last season.
As of now, there is no certainty as to whether or not Carlo will be backed in the transfer market, since Los Blancos have adopted a policy of Kylian Mbappe or nothing. If Mbappe fails to arrive this summer, Ancelotti will be expected to make the most out of the current squad which would be a herculean task for the Italian.
With the preseason training already underway, a few Real Madrid players will look to impress the new manager to secure their future at the club. Preseason is the perfect time for debutants, newcomers, youngsters, and even veteran players to make amends and impress their managers before the start of a grueling, long season of top-flight football.
I have come up with a list of three potential players who are expected to put on their best show over the preseason to impress Carlo Ancelotti. Let’s start with the first player on the list- Martin Odegaard.
MARTIN ODEGAARD
Martin Odegaard was signed in the winter transfer market of 2015 when he turned 16. However, he was not signing that Carlo Ancelotti had asked for and was more of a “Public Relations” signing according to Don Carlo himself from an excerpt from his autobiography, read more here.
"“The president decided that he would play three games with the first team as a public relations exercise. He could be the best player in the world, but I don’t care because he was not a player who I asked for. That signing was to do with PR.”"
As you can see, Ancelotti was not too happy then with the signing of Odegaard but was kind enough to give him his debut on the final matchday of La Liga in the 2014/15 season. However, since then, Odegaard has only evolved and matured into a modern-day footballer with a lot of potential.
His loan spell at Arsenal was far from being very impressive but he can still turn it around this season. He could actually end up becoming Carlo’s James Rodriguez or Isco, two attacking midfielders that Ancelotti really enjoyed working with.
There’s a lot of pressure on Odegaard, and hopefully this is the season he takes off and proves his worth. Maybe it’s time for him to show the world that he was not just simply a “PR signing”.
