SPAIN
Going into the tournament, Spain was not seen as one of the favorites, but they surprised everyone by reaching the semi-finals, painfully losing on penalties against the Italians. La Roja had a lot of impressive players, with Dani Olmo coming out as a stalwart in the latter stages. He provided 2 match-winning assists against Croatia in the Round of 16 and got a match rating of 8.37. Olmo was one of the best players on the pitch in the semi-final against Italy and provided a brilliant assist for Morata for the equalizer.
DENMARK
The neutrals’ favorites, Denmark, had a rollercoaster tournament, both emotionally and competitively. A brilliant team effort saw them reach the semi-finals, dodging Wales and the Czech Republic in the process, after a near escape in the group stage.
One of the best performers from the Danes was Mikkel Damsgaard. The youngster scored 2 goals and provided one assist, and set the stage on fire with his superb freekick in the semifinal against England. The youngster, who plays for Sampdoria, will have more than a few suitors waiting to grab his signature after this wonderful tournament.
Honorable mentions– Kasper Dolberg, Joakim Mæhle, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg
ENGLAND
The miserable end for England’s tournament means they miss out on a major trophy yet again. They were agonizingly close to winning it this time, and had a marvelous campaign, especially defensively as they conceded just 2 goals in the whole tournament. There were a handful of good individual displays, one of which was from Raheem Sterling. The pacy left-winger was one of the brightest players in a talent-stacked England side and silenced all the criticism he faced before the tournament. He scored 3 goals and one assist in the campaign and had an average rating of 7.28, according to WhoScored.
Honorable mention– Kalvin Phillips
ITALY
There were a lot of superb performers from the champions, but Federico Chiesa stands out as the best. The Juventus winger was absolutely a gem in all the games he played. His hard work, reluctance to lose the ball, and taking on defenders were terrifying for the opposition defense. His goals against Austria and Spain were very crucial. Chiesa acted as a reliable attacking outlet, meanwhile also contributing to the defense.
Honorable mentions– Nicolo Barella, Leonardo Spinazzola
