Real Madrid will need all hands on deck when the 2021-2022 LaLiga campaign ends. Even though Carlo Ancelotti is inheriting a team that won’t have the usual expectations associated with the Royal White club, we all know that high expectations are inevitable with any Real Madrid side.

And if Real want to aspire to their highest possible aims, they very much need left back Ferland Mendy to be a part of the equation. He is not the full equation, as Castilla standout Miguel Gutierrez showed his value at the end of the season. However, Mendy is established, and the evidence lies in how much worse Real Madrid performed as a team without the defensive stalwart in the XI.

Mendy missed the crucial stretch of the season with an injury called tibial periostitis. It is one of those annoying, lingering injuries, and it sounds like it has indeed lingered for the former Lyon standout.

According to a report from Carlos Forjanes of AS, Ferland Mendy still hasn’t recovered from this leg injury and has not been able to practice at all during Real Madrid’s preseason work.

Real Madrid could miss Ferland Mendy against Deportivo Alaves

And thus, he is now reportedly in doubt for Los Blancos’ 2021-2022 LaLiga season opener, which will be played on the night of Aug. 14 at the Mendizorroza against the notoriously tough Deportivo Alaves.

It remains to be seen what Mendy’s status is, and with an injury like this, things are especially fluid. Yet due to the lingering nature of this injury, which has apparently been troubling Mendy for months, Madridistas should be prepared for the possibility of the left back missing the match.

Alaves are not bereft of attacking quality, but this is a game Miguel can be an effective matchup at left back for Los Merengues. Even so, Mendy would be missed, and Real Madrid would really be worried if Mendy has to miss more than this match. Levante and Real Betis would be next up, and we know the attacking firepower those quality sides possess.

As it stands, this Ferland Mendy injury news is disconcerting but nothing to panic about. We are still about a month away from the start of a fresh LaLiga campaign.
