Real Madrid: 3 former players we wish Real had going into 2021-22
1. SERGIO RAMOS
I am pretty sure that our readers had an idea of who would be riding atop this list as soon as they saw Cristiano placed second. Yes, who else could it ever be, other than El Capitan himself? Sergio Ramos is the most recent to become a former player and there is no doubt that his departure was the hardest to endure among the ones on this list. Hasan’s tribute to the legend just sums up all the emotions I am going through as I write this.
The defense puts forward a lot of questions right now. Eder Militao and Nacho Fernandez are the only pure center-backs right now. Raphael Varane’s situation still looks blurry and too speculative to comment on. It’s for sure that the Frenchman hasn’t ruled out finishing his contract with Real Madrid and moving in the next summer.
To be honest, that never was the problem, the problem is that Real Madrid cannot afford to let go of a player of Varane’s quality for free and hence, are looking to get back something by selling him before his contract runs out.
Had Sergio Ramos been there with the club, the decision on Varane would have been so easy to make. He could have stayed to continue being one part of the most feared central defensive pairing in Spain. Or else, if he was set at making more money, which, in all honesty, he deserves, he would have been sold to a great club without the club having to worry much about the defense.
The second reason why he’d be a big miss is his leadership. Marcelo has been appointed the club captain after Ramos’s departure and I get where the decision must have come from. Marcelo too is nearing his last days with Madrid and he deserves to play out his last days with the highest of honors. But, the bitter truth is with Marcelo’s declining performances, I don’t see him being a regular. This would mean, the captain’s armband would be changing arms quite often this coming season.
Having Sergio Ramos could have so easily been the perfect solution. Yes, he was unavailable at times last season but he still played in 15 matches in the league And, he was instrumental in some of the Champions League fixtures. With the return of Antonio Pintus, there was all the hope for his fitness and game-time. Alas, he’d be missed dearly and in my opinion, is the player I wished most was still a part of the Royal White squad.
