Over the past several weeks, Real Madrid and Manchester United fans have been glued to their screens waiting for any news regarding a transfer involving star center back Raphael Varane, whom Los Blancos have been unable to sign to a new deal.
Varane seems keen on a move to the Premier League, where he anticipates a new challenge and sporting project to further his career. There is a risk in leaving a club as big as Madrid, but it appears that as Varane enters the prime of his career in central defense, he wants to try something new to enhance his legacy after winning four Champions Leagues with Real.
There has been much discussion regarding the final transfer fee, with United initially hoping for something lower than 50 million euros with one year left in Varane’s deal. Meanwhile, Real Madrid probably hoped for over 60 million euros in exchange for one of the world’s best talents, but after Sergio Ramos went to PSG and took one possible suitor off the list, United may be all there is for the French star.
David Alonso is now reporting on Onda Cero that a deal between Real Madrid and Manchester United is “imminent” and will be completed over the next few days. Alonso reports that the transfer fee will be in the region of 50 million euros.
A Raphael Varane transfer for 50 million euros is reasonable for both Real Madrid and Manchester United
That’s been the expected price. It is lower than what Real Madrid fans may have expected earlier this summer, but expectations had to be changed since pandemic prices have fallen, especially for players who are very clearly on their way out.
Real have tried to convince Varane, but they have not exactly made a compelling case due to their own wage situation, a commitment in defense to David Alaba and Eder Militao, and Varane’s own apparent wishes for a change in scenery.
Varane to United has always seemed highly likely, and it looks like Madridistas can pencil this in as the first big sale of the summer for the club, though it is definitely not the sale most fans wanted to see.
Remember nothing is official, though, and we have seen some false alarms on the Raphael Varane track. So stay tuned for more updates regarding the center back’s future. But 50 million euros is a very sensible deal for United and an evidently unavoidable one for the Men in White.
