Real Madrid reportedly make an irreversible decision on Eden Hazard’s future
In my previous Eden Hazard article, I had mentioned how the Belgian forward was living on borrowed time at Real Madrid and how this could be his final season at the club. However, it seems like Hazard will not be getting his final shot at redemption under Carlo Ancelotti.
According to Marca, Eden Hazard has been put on the market by Real Madrid and the situation at the moment is irreversible. The club wants the 30-year-old gone and off the payroll. With that being said, let’s have a closer look at whether or not the club is making the right decision.
Are Real Madrid heading in the right direction by offloading Eden Hazard?
In my opinion, Los Blancos are certainly heading in the right direction by offloading Eden Hazard this summer. Financially, Hazard’s signing has been a mess. The Merengues paid Chelsea 100 million euros for the forward who was entering the final year of his contract. Hazard then penned a five-year contract keeping him at the Spanish capital until 2024.
Fast forward two seasons since Hazard’s arrival, the Belgian has missed over 60 games through injuries and has only five goals to his name. Marca reports, that Real Madrid have incurred a loss worth 17 million euros in the past two seasons because of wages paid to Eden Hazard while he was injured.
Financially, Los Blancos simply cannot continue paying Eden Hazard his sky-high wages if he continues hopping in and out from the first team due to injuries which now almost seems uncontrollable.
The second reason is the possible signing of Kylian Mbappe. It’s quite obvious that Los Blancos are trying to raise funds to sign the 22-year-old this summer. In fact, we can expect a mass exodus of players too, to free up wages. Eden Hazard is the second-highest-paid player at the club and offloading him would give Florentino Perez enough room to work with Mbappe’s financial demands.
From a tactical standpoint, Kylian Mbappe primarily prefers operating either through the left-flank or the centre. Obviously, Karim Benzema will remain an indispensable starter next season, leaving only the left-wing as an option for Mbappe.
Real Madrid have struggled for goals and Mbappe’s signing would certainly take the pressure off Benzema’s shoulders. But that ultimately means that there’s no room for Hazard in the frontline unless he drifts to the right-wing.
However, offloading Eden Hazard this summer is not going to be easy. Firstly, I doubt whether anyone would want a 30-year-old who has been marred with injuries in the last two years on their team along with his sky-high wages. On top of that, most top European sides already have their frontline sorted out and are currently looking out for strikers rather than LW or RW.
It’s certainly not going to be easy to sell Eden Hazard especially because of his long list of injuries that have made him like an immovable asset at the Spanish capital.
