Every single summer for the last I don’t know how many years, we sit here, reading or writing about a potential Kylian Mbappe transfer that never sees the light of day. Real Madrid fans — along with the club itself — desperately want the Frenchman at the club. But for some reason or the other, a move never truly materialises. Either Real Madrid don’t have the funds to buy Mbappe, or PSG just don’t negotiate with any club for their most prized asset.
It has been a little bit of both in these last two years, but PSG are finally losing ground. They don’t have enough leverage anymore. There have been a number of rumors about Mbappe not wanting a new contract. Now, it’s either PSG risk losing him for free next season, or cash in on him today. But you already knew that.
So, let’s get look at a hypothetical situation: What if PSG offer Mbappe an outrageous salary, in a last-minute attempt to keep him in Paris for a little while longer? What happens to Real Madrid’s chances of signing him if that happens?
Mbappe’s desire to move to Real Madrid shouldn’t change even with a bigger contract offer from PSG
Well, it would depend on what kind of footballer Mbappe is. It would depend on what his aspirations are. It would depend on whether he wants to stay in his comfort zone, or get up and try something a bit more daring. No disrespect to PSG, by the way. They’re an excellent club.
There are few other clubs like Madrid, that have a demanding, hard-to-impress crowd that really test the character inside you. They test whether you’re built for a club like Real Madrid or not. They see what you’d do after hearing thousands of jeers after a string of bad performances. Do you come back stronger than ever, or do you succumb to the pressure?
If Mbappe is the kind of player I think he is, he would still want a move to the Bernabeu, regardless of all the money he may get at PSG. At the end of the day, it’s still his dream to put on the iconic white jersey of Real Madrid and play for the club. I don’t think you can use money as the only force that keeps Mbappe in Paris when he has his sights set on something greater. If he really wants the Madrid move, the money wouldn’t be an issue. It’s all about a player trying to achieve his dream.
The money is definitely a factor, but it’s not the priority for a guy who has already earned millions; a guy who would still be earning millions if he moves to Madrid. It depends on whether the dream move is worth losing all the extra money for. It would be for many players, and it wouldn’t for others. I think Mbappe belongs to the former category. Time will tell, though.
