Defence

Dani Carvajal(86 OVR->85 OVR)

For years, Dani Carvajal’s rating was never justified with him having a relatively low rating for one of the best right-backs in Europe. He finally saw a growth from 85 to 86 in FIFA 21 after a phenomenal 2019/20 season. But after an injury ridden 20/21 season in which he played just 1119 minutes, he will definitely see his rating go down. The decrease would be even worse, if not for the quality he had shown in those 1100-odd minutes.

Eder Militao (80 OVR->82 OVR)

The Brazilian saw his rating fall from 81 to 80 in the previous edition, but this time he should see his highest rating so far for an extraordinary finish to the season. If he got to play for more than two months, the boost could’ve been even better, but with age on his side and by looking at his potential we can say that he will make it to the top someday.

David Alaba(84 OVR->85 OVR)

Real Madrid’s only signing of the summer and their new no.4, David Alaba, had a great season with Bayern Munich in 20/21, with him playing in various positions and helping the team in various ways. He will be considered as a CB by EA Sports despite his versatility, and he should be seeing an improvement in his rating, in his first appearance as a Real Madrid player on the game.

Raphael Varane(86 OVR->87 OVR)

Varane did have some bad games in 2020, but he has been superb in the rest of the season, and with him entering his peak he should be definitely seeing an increment in his rating. He was 8th among the top-rated centrebacks of FIFA 21, but this time he should be rated above Mats Hummels Gerard Pique and Giorgio Chiellini, who were all rated above the Frenchman.

Nacho Fernandez(80 OVR->83 OVR)

He was pretty much the club’s first-choice defender for the majority of the season, and he played at a superb level, being one of the best central defenders across Spain. He saw his rating plummet from 82 to 80 due to an injury-marred 19/20 season, but this time his stocks should be rising easily. Hope his exploits don’t go unnoticed by EA Sports, unlike Luis Enrique.

Marcelo(83 OVR->81 OVR)

Marcelo has always been among the most skilful players on FIFA, but age has caught up with him. He isn’t the same player that he was three years ago when he was rated 88 in FIFA 19. And to be honest, there are chances of his rating being even lesser.

Alvaro Odriozola(79 OVR->79 OVR)

Odriozola did have a great end to the season, but he had struggled a lot until March. If not for the final month of the season, his rating could’ve been reduced further, and that bright period neutralized the judgement of his season. If EA Sports believe that “It doesn’t matter how you start-it matters how you finish”, then he can be hopeful of an increment.

Ferland Mendy(83 OVR->85 OVR)

The Frenchman saw a massive upgrade from 80 to 83 in FIFA 21, and he should be expecting the same this time. He has been superb for Real Madrid, and his performances prove that he deserves an 85 rating. And if the makers have taken note of his goal against Atalanta, they should be looking to improve his 5-star weak foot and 64 long shots rating.

Jesus Vallejo(75 OVR->74 OVR)

Given the way his 2020/21 season at Granada has gone, it’s almost certain that he will see a reduction in his rating.

Overall Judgement:

I’m sure that there will be an improvement in the ratings of at least two players, but with the departure of Real Madrid’s best defender on FIFA, Sergio Ramos, and the possible departure of Raphael Varane, we can expect a possible downfall from overall defensive ratings to 84 to 83.
