Football and life share many similarities with the most glaring one having to be recency bias. It’s easy for us to forget the past and focus on the current situation, which is something that we see happening with Marcelo. However, with all the negative comments surrounding the new Real Madrid captain, it should not be mistaken for hatred.

Marcelo is an icon of this club and a legend in his own right as he dazzled us all for the majority of his 13 years at the club after having to take over from another Brazilian legend in Roberto Carlos. Having said that, time waits for no one and sooner or later, it catches up with you. It’s clear to see that time has not been kind to Marcelo either.

With the departure of Sergio Ramos, Marcelo was the next in line to take on the massive responsibility of being the captain of the club. Quickly, any news of him possibly leaving were put to the side as he made it clear that he’s staying. Therefore, we find ourselves wondering what we can expect from a player who is past his best and if we are to be brutally honest, a liability to the team in recent seasons.
