Real Madrid endured a trophyless 2020/21 campaign, as they gave away the La Liga title to Atlético Madrid. There were many ups and downs during the season, and ultimately the winner was decided on the last matchday, as Atlético won their first league title since 2014.
All three of the top teams dropped many points across the season. There were numerous opportunities for Real Madrid to run away with the title, but they regularly dropped points and lost it. One of the significant reasons for this was injury issues. But there were other central issues too, which the club would need to resolve to avoid a repeat of last season.
Here we look at the biggest keys to reclaiming the La Liga trophy next season.
Consistency
The lack of consistency was one of the reasons Real struggled last season. There was a lack of intent that led to a lot of points lost against comparatively easier oppositions: Real Madrid dropped points against six out of the ten teams who finished in the bottom half of the table. There were defeats against Cádiz, Alaves, Levante, and draws against Elche, Osasuna, and Getafe. Interestingly, they didn’t lose a single match against the top 5 teams. This may have been the result of insufficient intent and the inability to break low-block defenses.
For Real Madrid to have a shot at winning the league next season, they must avoid such inconsistencies and give their 100 per cent in every game.
