In August, the period which Toni Kroos is certainly expected to miss, Real Madrid face Deportivo Alaves, Levante, and Real Betis- all away from home. Not only are these teams some of the most underrated ones in La Liga, but they are also capable of keeping the ball and dominating the midfield. In addition to that, they are the best capitalizers of an opponent’s mistakes and leave very few stones unturned- which makes Isco only a last choice option to employ in the midfield.

Previously the go-to option to unlock any defence even in a Champions League final, Isco’s Real Madrid career has fallen down like a pack of cards ever since the end of the 2017/18 campaign. He is far from his usual self and is too slow and too predictable. He spends a lot of time on the ball, which would have been good if he was a good dribbler as of old. But his footwork is something which even a blind man can predict in all honestly, and his overall work rate is all the worse.

Los Merengues are hoping to push him out of the exit door, but he has a lack of suitors and Ancelotti is also determined to get the best out of him. However, if the Italian prefers Isco over Valverde or Odegaard- it is a clear question mark on his team selection and preference for the old guard, which is a mistake that is synonymous with Zinedine Zidane. Hence, Isco’s involvement should only be a very skippable option in the event that one or both of the other options get injured.
