In this article, I am going to analyse three Real Madrid players who have not performed up to the mark and are not living up to the expectations of their hefty contracts. We will look into factors such as why the player has struggled, whether or not he can be sold this summer and how important is his influence on the squad. Let’s start with the first player on the list: Marcelo.

MARCELO

Marcelo was once hailed to be the world’s best left-back. His prime years were during Real Madrid’s historic European three-peat but since then, his form has only plummeted and spiralled down through the years and his best days are far gone now.

Today, despite being the captain of the team, Marcelo lacks the quality to be a regular starter. Ferland Mendy has proven out to be an excellent acquisition for the team and the Frenchman has been the first-choice left-back since he signed in 2019.

Castilla prodigy Miguel Gutierrez has also shown glimpses of quality. In my opinion, Gutierrez should be considered as the second choice left-back ahead of Marcelo. The Brazilian simply lacks the physical conditioning to play as left-back and his lack of defensive awareness makes him a liability in the starting eleven.

Real Madrid will not sell Marcelo this summer, despite the rumours a couple of months ago. The veteran will see out his contract that expires next year and will walk out of Madrid as a free agent. I doubt that Marcelo will hang his boots for good in 2022 and will most likely move to the MLS or another such league.

According to Sportekz, Marcelo earns around 7.2 million pounds a year. The disparity between his wages and his performances is concerning, to say the least. Nonetheless, his contract runs out next season and Madrid will no longer have to bear his inflated wages.

Let’s now have a look at the next player. Click the link below.
