Rodrygo Goes has a new kit number for the 2021-2022 season
Real Madrid winger Rodrygo Goes is one of the players Madridistas are most excited to watch develop over the next few years. After some dream-like moments in his debut season, Rodrygo looked like he was on the precipice of becoming an important player on the wings in 2020-2021 before a December injury set his season back.
In the end, the second-year Madridista finished with two goals and seven assists in all competitions, including six assists in LaLiga. He was the only winger who did not receive the ire of fans, even though he did not get many opportunities to shine in his preferred starting position on the left side of the attack.
Rodrygo could be in line for a big season under Carlo Ancelotti, and if he does get more opportunities under the new manager, he’d do so with a new jersey number.
According to MadridistaReal, Rodrygo Goes has changed his kit number from 25 to 16, meaning he is taking over the number James Rodriguez vacated before joining Everton.
Rodrygo Goes will now wear the No. 16 for Real Madrid
The change can be found on the Real Madrid squad page on the official LaLiga website. Rodrygo will now slot in between No. 15 Isco and No. 17 Lucas Vazquez.
So if the Brazilian winger has a big 2021-2022 campaign, smitten Madridistas have a new jersey to look forward to getting, as they would then be sporting the No. 16 with Rodrygo emblazoned above it. And given Rodrygo has the second-fastest debut goal in Real Madrid history behind only the No. 9 Ronaldo, it’s fair to wonder if he could take on a more prestigious jersey in the future. Or maybe he will make the number 16 iconic on his own.
There are high hopes for the former Santos man, and his own role in the squad could hinge on the uncertain future regarding PSG transfer target Kylian Mbappe, who may actually join Los Blancos in 2021 if PSG cannot keep Mbappe and Lionel Messi on their books.
We’ll see what the future holds for Rodrygo, but with a new jersey number, a new manager, and ever-improving skills, the 20-year-old will be ready to make the 2021-2022 season one to remember. If Mbappe does not arrive, then Real will most likely need to help push Rodrygo to take that next big step with the first team.
