Even though Martin Odegaard is an attacking midfielder, Real Madrid don’t need to replace him with a like-for-like option, more so because players from the number 10 position without any versatility are running out of fashion in recent years. The way the careers of Mesut Ozil and James Rodriguez for instance have panned out tells you a lot about the obsoleting of the position.

For that reason, the Whites turning to a versatile midfielder makes the most sense and Camavinga fits the bill in every possible way. He is in the final year of his contract at Lille, which means the club can sign him for free next year or bring him in for a relatively cheap transfer fee by the end of the transfer window in August itself, though that is a prospect which has not been discussed yet.

The youngster is playing for Rennes and has been linked with Real Madrid for several months now. At only 18, he is a longer-term option than anyone in the market. Camavinga is capable of playing as a defensive midfielder to good avail and can already be a perfect back-up to Casemiro. Although the number 6 position is his favoured option, he has and can flourish anywhere in the central area.
