By now every Real Madrid fan is aware that Martin Odegaard could be sold in the next few days or so. The Norwegian is linked with a return to Arsenal where he spent a six-month loan last season before returning to the Spanish capital. And now, The Athletic’s David Ornstein, among others, reports that a deal is close.

Odegaard was signed by Real Madrid in the winter transfer market of 2014-15 and became the youngster ever player to debut for Los Blancos. The following season, the Norwegian was sent out on loan to the Netherlands where he represented two clubs before returning to Spain and joining Real Sociedad on loan.

It was at Sociedad where Odegaard kicked off his career and showed the world why Real Madrid racked him up when he was just 16-years-old. After an impressive loan spell with Sociedad, Martin Odegaard was called back by Zinedine Zidane to the Spanish capital but he failed to prove his worth and was subsequently loaned out to Arsenal.

At the Emirates, the Norwegian had a somewhat mixed spell and now is linked with a return as he prefers playing under Mikel Arteta who is willing to guarantee him a starter’s role. At Real Madrid, Odegaard is not willing to fight for a place as he believes he’s fallen down the pecking order with Isco and Federico Valverde being the preferred choices ahead of him.

Real Madrid are better off without Martin Odegaard

It seems like Martin Odegaard lacks the zest and mentality to fight for a spot. He wants an important role without proving his worth and such demands are always turned down at a club like Real Madrid.

His desire to leave the club this summer in search of a prominent role has been accepted by Los Blancos. The club is willing to part ways with Odegaard for 50 million euros and those funds will probably be used to sign Kylian Mbappe.

While there’s no denying that Martin Odegaard is a phenomenal talent and an asset for the future. In my opinion, there’s no point in holding onto a player that does not want to compete for a spot in the starting eleven. Despite Toni Kroos and Dani Ceballos being injured, Martin Odegaard still believes he does not have a role under Carlo Ancelotti.

In such circumstances, it’s better to part ways. It’s a win-win for Real Madrid, they sell a player for 50 million euros who does not want to stay and can use that transfer to get Kylian Mbappe on board.

Odegaard’s departure will also create more opportunities for Sergio Arribas. The youngster has shown the determination and zest to compete and play for Real Madrid, unlike Odegaard who wants the easy way out.

Maybe it’s the right time to call the curtains on Martin Odegaard’s tenure at Real Madrid. It was full of promise and hope but the bitter reality is that he lacks the mentality to play for a club of this grand stature.
