Real Madrid are going all-in for Kylian Mbappe this summer, and they know they can sign the most valuable player in world football for free next summer if PSG dig their heels into the ground and refuse to sell. Mbappe is going to try and push his current club to open negotiations with Real, but since the Parisians have held firm to this point, there’s a real chance Madridistas have to wait another year.

But not everyone at the club is content with sitting idly by. Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly been talking to Cristiano Ronaldo and his entourage in the hopes of reuniting with the superstar he won La Decima with during his first stint with Real Madrid.

Florentino Perez had previously publicly called a Ronaldo transfer impossible. He is likely still focused on Mbappe, but it’s hard to see the president truly following up on that initial statement if Mbappe stays and he has no other alternative. Judging by the fact that Real Madrid nearly won LaLiga last season despite having no goal-scorers besides Karim Benzema and 60+ injuries, it’s safe to say Real could reach the pinnacle of football with a 30-goal superstar like Mbappe or, yes, Ronaldo.

Let’s take a look at what would need to happen in order for a Cristiano Ronaldo transfer to Real Madrid to make sense.

Kylian Mbappe would have to be off the table for Real Madrid

So we should probably get the most important and primary piece of the puzzle out of the way. Cristiano Ronaldo does not even enter the equation for Real Madrid if there is any chance the Royal White club can bring Kylian Mbappe to his dream stadium, the Santiago Bernabeu.

Now, it could happen that Ronaldo eventually joins Mbappe, since his own contract with Juventus runs out in 2022. But it is more likely that Ronaldo joins Lionel Messi at PSG and replaces Mbappe.

Aside from all that speculation, the reality is that Real Madrid need a superstar for the next 10 years. They need someone who can be what Ronaldo was in the last decade and elevate this club to Champions League status as a 30-40 goal-scorer who brings the viewers. Mbappe fills both pieces and is the true heir to Ronaldo’s No. 7 at the Bernabeu.

But if Real Madrid cannot sign Mbappe because PSG are intent on keeping him and have no obligation to any financial regulations, then Ronaldo goes from being Mbappe’s Plan B to being Real’s Plan A. Perez may have called the move impossible, but I do believe Ancelotti has sway. And he can’t be the only one in the building who wants to sign Serie A’s best goal-scorer.
