Champions League: Ranking the top 5 strikers before the 2021-22 competition begins
4. Atletico Madrid ST Luis Suarez
Luis Suarez in my opinion is one of the deadliest strikers in LaLiga currently. To say the least, he deserved much more than his unceremonious exit from the Catalan giants, FC Barcelona. The Uruguayan did recover some of his lost pride with a league-winning goal-scoring record. His season, though interrupted by injuries remained a successful one with important goals including the final day goal that won Atletico Madrid the league.
As far as the Champions League is considered, the past season was a disappointment for both Atleti and Suarez. He did impress with his goal-scoring prowess but couldn’t find the net even once. His last season with Barcelona was better with five goals and two assists in the competition, per FBref. Atletico was finally knocked out by Chelsea, the eventual winners, in the Round of 16.
After being considered a surplus to FC Barcelona’s requirements, Luis Suarez proved his critics wrong scoring 21 goals in 32 appearances and leading his new club to their first title in seven years. In doing so he also lifted his fourth LaLiga title while his former club had to give up on their title hopes, come the closing Matchdays.
Suarez is a deadly presence on any team sheet. His ability to show up at the most crucial times should make him a force to recon in the upcoming Champions League. He is a pure finisher who has a gifted instinct. At times, he feels no need to look at the target at all and yet finish perfectly into the bottom corners of the net. With Atletico looking a much better and prepared side with their recent signings, Luis Suarez would surely be one of the best strikers to play in the season’s edition of the Champions League.
