Champions League: Ranking the top 5 strikers before the 2021-22 competition begins
1. Bayern Munich ST Robert Lewandowski
Robert Lewandowski missed out on robbing his first Ballon d’Or in season 2019/20 after putting on a great show in the Bundesliga and the Champions League. The season’s top scorer, Lewandowski scored 55 times in 47 appearances in all competitions for Bayern, per FBref. This also was his career-best record. FC Bayern undisputedly were the real winners in a pandemic struck 2019-20 season.
He continued the same form into 2020-21. The Polish striker has found the net an astounding 48 times in 40 appearances. In the process, he also broke Gerd Muller’s 49-year old record of scoring 40 league goals in a single campaign. This season too Lewandowski has been doing what he usually does scoring five goals in three matches.
His season was shortly interrupted by a knee injury problem that he picked up during the World Cup qualification match between Poland and Andorra. However, the big man bounced back strong as is evident. Breaking the record of a goal-scoring legend like Gerd Muller is no ordinary feat. His injury did have an important repercussion though, he missed the Champions League quarterfinal clash against Paris Saint-Germain, where Mauricio Pochettino’s men advanced on away goals after a dominant first-leg display.
Never mind the Champions League exit, the Bavarians made it up with a ninth consecutive Bundesliga title and Lewandowski remained their key man throughout the campaign. He scored more than once in eight games that included two hat-tricks and a four-goal outing. And as far as the debate on strikers in Europe exists, Robert Lewandowski is the undisputed winner and would be the best striker to play in the upcoming Champions League.
