Real Madrid clinched three crucial points in their opening fixture of the UEFA Champions League against Inter Milan at the San Siro. Carlo Ancelotti‘s men fought hard until the very last minute of the game to seal their winner after Rodrygo Goes found the back of the net from a brilliant team effort.

While Madrid sealed three points, Eden Hazard was left out on the bench and watched the entire game as a mere spectator. Quite an unusual situation for the Belgian who put on a fine display last time the Merengues faced Inter at San Siro.

It’s obvious that when you leave a record signing on the bench, the media will create something out of it.

Carlo Ancelotti was questioned about his decision to which he replied: “Hazard? I thought about using him in the 2nd half but I preferred Rodrygo and Vinicius.”

Has Eden Hazard fallen down the pecking order at Real Madrid under Carlo Ancelotti?

For once, it looks like Eden Hazard has to fight and prove his worth to secure a spot in the starting eleven. No longer will he be given a spot straight away just because he’s Eden Hazard- the club’s most expensive signing. While the Belgian enjoyed the backing and support in his first two years under Zinedine Zidane, this season is going to be an uphill battle for him under Ancelotti.

Vinicius Jr is already ahead of Hazard in the pecking order. The Brazilian has been sensational in front of goal and there’s no way that Ancelotti is going to consider dropping the 21-year-old soon anytime.

But why has Hazard lost his prominence under Carlo Ancelotti’s eyes? It could be because the 30-year-old has not done enough yet in the few matches nor have any of his performances been praiseworthy. Meanwhile, other forwards like Vinicius and Rodrygo are taking their chances and are making the most out of their minutes.

Another reason could be because Hazard is not working hard enough. Against Celta Vigo, Eden Hazard failed to track his marker ( the left-back) and was ball-watching as the left-back dribbled past before the counter-attack led to a goal.

There were also a few chances where Hazard was supposed to attack the ball for a goal but instead, he was again caught ball watching. His defensive contribution is nil nor does he offer anything exceptional upfront which neither Rodrygo or Vinicius can offer as well.

While it’s too early to say whether Hazard’s chances are running thin, it’s safe to say that Ancelotti wants more from him. He’s not yet at his physical best yet but that’s been the case for three seasons now.

It’s time for Eden Hazard to step up with his performances and convince the fans and the club. This could be his final lap at the Spanish capital with Kylian Mbappe expected to join next season. It’s now or never for Hazard to make an impact and seal his future.
