Real Madrid: Five players who are in their final season with the club
Revolution is a word we hear every summer at Real Madrid, especially when the club has ended a season without any silverware. Real Madrid were expected to spend big and go for big names in the 2021 summer transfer window. But there was minimal hype in terms of arrivals until the last week of August, during which the Mbappe transfer saga happened and the signing of Eduardo Camavinga was secured in the last 24 hours of the transfer window.
And there was a massive revolution departure-wise, with Los Blancos letting go of their two starting centre-backs, Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane. They also sold Martin Odegaard for a decent price, while Alvaro Odriozola, Brahim Diaz, and Takefusa Kubo were loaned out. Something similar can be expected next season, with a handful of players’ contracts expiring in 2022, and with huge signings of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland expected to be completed.
So let us have a look at five such players who could leave Real Madrid in 2022 or even as early as the winter of 2021, and are in their final season as a Real Madrid player. Let me give you some spoilers before diving into the list. Two names that are not a part of the list are Luka Modric and Mariano Diaz.
Luka Modric’s contract is going to expire in 2022, like three of the players mentioned in the list, but the Croatian has been keen to extend his contract for another year and then retire at Real Madrid, according to MARCA. Even the club wouldn’t mind extending Modric’s contract for another year, considering the fact that he has been playing at a superb level, and he would be open to taking a pay cut or accept a reduced role.
And coming to Mariano Diaz, I think there is only one way in which he might leave Real Madrid, and that is only when his contract ends in 2023. After looking at the way he has denied leaving Real Madrid in spite of the club’s decision to sell him, it’s clear that he doesn’t want to leave Real Madrid and is happy to stay while not getting any minutes to play. No other club is ready to pay him as much as Real Madrid, and even a contract termination looks unlikely with Mariano showing no interest to leave.
