Real Madrid Transfers: 5 Bundesliga midfielders to keep an eye on
3. Borussia Dortmund AM Gio Reyna
So we are into the top three now, and approaching the crowd favorite section of this list. The first player in the category is a potential superstar of the future, the 18-year-old American International and Dortmund’s proud prospect, Giovanni Reyna. Reyna is an absolute powerhouse of creativity and a big threat-on-goal. He has already scored two in three league appearances in the season.
He showed his enormous potential last season with nine goal contributions, four of which he scored himself. Bagging 23 starts at 17 years of age isn’t an ordinary feat, there must be something extremely special about the player. He made his case for a first-team future with the last few games of 2019/20 where he set up a goal in a 2-0 win over RB Leipzig. And, since then few key departures like that of Jadon Sancho have meant more game-time for the young attacking midfielder.
He does fairly well with his defensive chores, preferring tackles over interceptions. But, it is the offensive play where he absolutely shines. He has averaged 2.7 keys passes so far in the Bundesliga this season. Last season the number stood at 1.1. It is in tight spaces and short exchanges where Reyna’s creativity takes a peak. He has been consistently trying to improve his long-range play which is indicative of an upward curve in his long balls and crossing stats. He has averaged one cross and 0.7 long balls per game which is a good improvement from last season’s 0.4 crosses and long balls per game. And, not to forget he has also assisted a goal in each of the European Campaigns last season and the one before that.
He fits in Real Madrid’s strategy of buying youngsters at economic sense and developing them further. He is just 18 years old and can very well be the attacking midfielder in Real’s future lineup.
