3. The attacking plan: Smart linkups and more of Vinicius Jr

Barcelona’s defending has been their constant nightmare this season. They are choking in big matches especially when the opponents utilize space very well and put in good linkups while advancing. The defense just hasn’t stepped up and it’s surprising. You just cannot turn your back on a powerfully hit Thomas Muller shot if you are playing center back in the very first Champions League Matchday.

It has been a constant theme, even senior defenders like Gerard Pique were left dumbfounded with smart linkups by teams such as Benfica. The defense has been an absolute nightmare that would be the only way I would sum it up.

Real Madrid on the other hand is playing some of the best attacking football they have played in some time. The linkups are fast and smart. Karim Benzema has been creative and direct with superb off-the-ball movement to aid exchanges. Vinicius Junior has been playing in a league of his own with no one able to track him or stop him in his tracks. He is creating problems against any opponent he plays.

The Vini factor is yet another key thing going into the all-important fixture. Barcelona’s right fullbacks have been a constant loophole in their defense. The likes of Oscar Mingueza or Sergi Roberto have had a hard time on the right side of the defensive third. That is the exact space where Vini shines, he can beat defenders, cut inside, finish, and even set up others in the box. And, to be fair, no one of Barcelona’s possible options on the right is equipped enough to contain Vinicius in this form.
