Real Madrid defeated Elche 2-1 on the road on LaLiga’s Matchday 12 this weekend, as Vinicius Junior converted both of the chances that came his way. This was another difficult match for Los Blancos, but all that matters is they secured the three points. What makes this win even sweeter is that neither Karim Benzema nor Luka Jovic were available.

Here are five burning questions from Real’s latest victory, as the team bounced back from their scoreless draw with Osasuna at mid-week.

How good is Vinicius Junior?

I specifically wanted to start with something about Vinicius Junior, so I apologize for asking what is essentially an unanswerable – and maybe even rhetorical – question.

The left winger has been beyond brilliant to start the 2021-2022 season. After his goals against Elche, the 21-year-old is now at nine goals in all competitions. To go with three assists. And you wonder why Tite has called up Philippe Coutinho instead of Vini.

This season, Vinicius has been almost automatic in front of goal. He does not dither in the penalty area. This is a man on a mission, and his mission is to win football games for Los Blancos, as he did on Saturday afternoon. Vini is ruthless in front of goal now, finishing with either foot and with varying techniques. Look no further than the two goals he scored against Elche. One was a left-footed finish into the far corner while coming in from the left-hand side (David Alaba would be proud), while the other was a composed and skillful lift over goalkeeper Kiko Casilla.

Vini has been as prolific as anyone in LaLiga, Karim Benzema included. He ranks among the best forwards in the world right now, right there with the Benzemas, Mohamed Salahs, Erling Haalands, Robert Lewandowski, and, yes, Kylian Mbappes of the world.

Saturday’s display at Elche was just the latest evidence of his growing superstardom.
