Real Madrid dodged a bullet by not extending terms with Sergio Ramos
The unthinkable unfolded before our eyes last summer as Real Madrid and Sergio Ramos ended their 16-year-long association. The 35-year-old centre-back left the club as a free agent in the summer after Real Madrid refused to meet his demands over a two-year extension.
Ramos then signed for Paris Saint-Germain and signed a two-year deal with Les Parisiens keeping him at the club until 2023. The Spain international was part of PSG’s grand summer transfer window that also included the signings of Achraf Hakimi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Georginio Wijnaldum, Lionel Messi, and also a Neymar Jr. contract extension.
Ramos’ departure from the Spanish capital was not taken well by the club faithful and Florentino Perez was held responsible for the former captain’s departure. Ramos’ departure brought more criticism towards Perez who was also in the media spotlight for the creation of the European Super League and was heavily criticised globally for being the founder.
It almost felt like Florentino Perez’s best interests were not with the club but rather focused on the creation of the ESL. The president managed to win back the faith of Madridistas with the signings of David Alaba and Eduardo Camavinga in the transfer window while also bringing back Carlo Ancelotti to lead the team.
Does Sergio Ramos regret leaving Real Madrid?
It was indeed a difficult summer for Real Madrid fans to watch Zinedine Zidane, Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane leave together. Despite the hardship, Real Madrid have started the 2021-22 season on a strong foot under Carlo Ancelotti who has managed to make the best out of a squad that did not look very promising at all.
While Real Madrid has seemingly moved on in life in Sergio Ramos’ absence, the 35-year-old could possibly be regretting his decision of trying to play hardball with Florentino Perez and get the contract he wanted.
According to Le Parisien, Sergio Ramos’ contract with Paris Saint-Germain could be terminated as the 35-year-old is yet to feature in a single game for PSG since signing in August. In fact, Ramos has not played a single minute of professional football since May and the club officials believe that they have made a serious mistake with his signing.
Ramos picked up an injury while playing for Real Madrid against Chelsea in May and since then he was no longer available for the business end of the season. Given his age and injury, Real Madrid were only willing to offer a single-year extension but Ramos was adamant on a two-year extension which eventually lead to his departure for Paris.
Paris Saint-Germain were aware of Ramos’ injury record but still went ahead with the deal.
"PSG director Leonardo on Sergio Ramos “It’s the Spanish press playing with this story… but we knew about Sergio Ramos situation before, and we know what’s happening”- Fabrizio Romano"
At the moment, it looks like Paris Saint-Germain regret their decision of signing Sergio Ramos on a two-year deal. Remember, this was the same club that parted ways with their best centre-back, Thiago Silva, because of his age and injuries and ironically they signed a 35-year-old Sergio Ramos who can’t seem to catch a break from injuries.
It does look like Real Madrid dodged a bullet by letting Sergio Ramos go and bringing in David Alaba, who has been a huge asset for the club. The Austrian has perfectly settled into the club and into the number 4 shirt. He’s displayed a great sense of leadership in the backline and is one of the popular figures amongst the youngster despite being a newcomer to the team.
