REAL MADRID WILL SEAL QUALIFICATION IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

If Real Madrid are able to win against Shakhtar Donetsk and Sheriff Tiraspol in their two Champions League outings this month, they would have sealed qualification to the round of 16 with one game to play. While that may not guarantee them top spot, depending on the other results on the group too, qualification is an obligation and will be one thing ticked off the book.

Carlo Ancelotti will no doubt emphasize to his players the importance of qualifying for the next stage of the Champions League this month itself, particularly because league meetings against Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid are sandwiched by the visit of Inter Milan to the Bernabeu. If the Whites seal qualification earlier, they can rest players against the Nerazzurri because that match will practically be a dead rubber in the broader picture for the season.

Real Madrid are obviously expected to go all the way in the Champions League in every season, but one must come to terms with the fact that they are not favourites for the title this time around. Winning the league is perhaps a more achievable objective and something that Ancelotti will be hoping to do in order to become the first manager to win each of Europe’s top five leagues.
