Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos, who is entering the final year and a half of his contract with the club, has been linked with a switch elsewhere.

Newcastle United, who have been recently taken over by a Saudi Arabian state-owned billionaire fund, is being touted as a potential destination for the former Germany international. The Magpies are thought to be open to the idea of paying up to 30 million euros for the midfield maestro’s services but the veracity of the transfer rumour has now been exposed.

Madridista Real, a top-tier source, has revealed that Kroos only sees his future at Real Madrid and wants to retire at the Santiago Bernabeu itself.

The former Bayern Munich superstar has a contract with the Merengues until June 2023, and then, when he is 33 years old, Kroos will decide whether he wants to call an end to his career at the top level or extend for a shorter term.

Toni Kroos has no reason to go to Newcastle

Kroos is now 31 years old and has won practically everything he possibly can on club level over his decade at the elite level, playing for two fine clubs like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Moreover, the German is not interested in playing until much longer and wants to hang up his boots while playing at the very highest level, when he still remains a fan favourite and at the top of his game.

Should he go to Newcastle United, it will definitely be a downgrade from Real Madrid despite the Premier League side now having extremely rich owners who can buy their way to silverware. However, ultimately that is also a process that will take a couple of years at the very least, by which time Kroos would have reached his planned age of retirement.

Newcastle United at the moment are shuttling between Premier League safety and relegation after every match in the Premier League and life after Steve Bruce, even this season, looks uncertain for them in the English top division. It is hard to imagine them playing Champions League or even Europa League football in the next couple of years.

By going to Newcastle, Kroos will only have a hefty paycheck and not the sporting success which he envisages before retiring at Real Madrid, as stated by himself. Additionally, the player loves Madrid and does not seem to be fazed by money as he is among those who keep a low profile at the club despite having a legendary status and creates little to no issues regarding money.

Despite being taken over by billionaires, Newcastle are, with all due respect, still minnows, and not a destination which serial winners like Toni Kroos would consider unless their qualities deteriorate massively or if they are looking for an environment with bottomless money but low expectations. Do you think Kroos will retire in 2023 or extend his contract by a year or two at Real Madrid itself?
