Real Madrid may be open to selling Marco Asensio in the upcoming transfer windows, depending on the kinds of offers they receive. Though Carlo Ancelotti has been trying to get Asensio involved in his plans, the left-footer has remained just as inconsistent as he was in the 2020-2021 season under Zinedine Zidane. And no Madridista is surprised by this either.

Aside from one brilliant hat trick against Mallorca in which the opposition gave him acres of space in the middle of the pitch to shoot, Asensio has been a shadow for Los Blancos this season. His recent performances were so underwhelming that Carlo Ancelotti went with the more energetic Lucas Vazquez on the right wing. The decision paid off.

So if Asensio is on the transfer market, where could he go? There are rumors suggesting Marco Asensio could go to Borussia Dortmund. One person who covers Dortmund seemed skeptical about this rumor, and I would like to expand and squash this “report” from El Nacional.

The original source of this report has no track record and has only recently been reporting transfer rumors. None of them are believable, and each Real Madrid rumor is as ridiculous as the last. Sergio Reguilon coming back? Toni Kroos to Newcastle? Who would buy any of it?

Marco Asensio is not the kind of player Dortmund usually buys

But let’s specifically use logic to refute the likelihood of Asensio moving to Dortmund, because this is a move that would make absolutely no sense for the Black and Yellows.

Tell me, when was the last time Dortmund signed a 25/26-year-old lacking dynamism for 30-40 million euros? How many times have they signed an established player with expensive wages and limited resale value?

Asensio does not fit the ethos of the kind of players Dortmund buys. They go after young, ascending players who can become stars. If they do sign a veteran, they go for someone who understands the club and is among the best at their position in the league, such as Mats Hummels, or someone cheap who can start at a position where it is difficult to sign a young contributor. Thomas Meunier (a mistake of a signing, by the way) and Axel Witsel come to mind. Even the signings of Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt fit, as they were signed as relatively young stars in the Bundesliga with experience playing at a high level in the league.

Meanwhile, Asensio hasn’t been great in a long time. Dortmund already have attacking midfielders and wingers with better current performances and more future upside than Asensio. These players are also cheaper in terms of wages, such as Brandt, Hazard, and youngster Gio Reyna.

Asensio could be a reclamation project for a Premier League side with money to spend. But Dortmund? Why would they invest their precious funds on someone who cannot be explosive enough to play their exciting brand of football on the wings and isn’t demonstrably better than their current attacking midfield options? Asensio would not get minutes over Marco Reus or Reyna, for example.

So don’t take the Asensio rumors to Dortmund seriously. They don’t make sense. If he’s going anywhere, then it is to a club that isn’t afraid to take a gamble on a veteran flier with name recognition. BVB, on the other hand, don’t care. They want investments or more affordable veteran players.
