After a long saga, Barcelona finally got the coach they wanted as former club legend Xavi Hernandez returns as manager. As expected, whenever a former player returns, the discussions are always about him being a legend and knowing the philosophy of the club rather than his achievements as a coach. See what Real Madrid had with Zinedine Zidane in his first tenure.

Initially, Barcelona might see a boost as players tend to increase their performances when another manager comes in. Especially when Xavi has the entire backing of the board and the supporters. However, when that boost disappears, that is where Xavi will need to demonstrate the kind of manager he is.

Only time will tell whether he succeeds or not, but what should Real Madrid fans make of Xavi’s appointment?

Xavi’s signing could prove to be Real Madrid’s chance to extend the gap between them and Barcelona

The only thing Real Madrid fans should take from this is that Barcelona continues to be fixated on this idea of playing the way they used to under Pep Guardiola and that it presents a unique opportunity for Real Madrid to further distance themselves; and not just this season. They could say whatever they want, but Xavi is still unproven and is going into a problematic situation where the team is underperforming and the board continues to have its issues.

Even if he manages to get immediate results, it is still going to take time and resources for Barcelona to be the force they use to be in past. Although Xavi will get time, getting resources is going to be difficult knowing the situation of the club. Not to mention Barcelona’s style of play requires particular players that can be hard to find.  This doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to happen. But, it is really tough.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid has never been fixated on a particular style and are only interested in playing in a way that brings them success. That makes the club more available to sign all kinds of coaches and players. Of course, supporters want the team to play well, but above all, they want to see results.

If Barcelona do not get themselves out of the situation they are currently in and Real Madrid manage to make some important signings, they could go on to dominate the league in the same manner that Bayern Munich have been doing for the past nine years.
