2. Sevilla, Nov. 28

Sevilla is one of those teams nobody wants to face. Julen Lopetegui has done wonders with the Andalusian club since joining them. The ex-Real Madrid manager has truly found his home with this proud organization, and this could be the first year they push Los Blancos and Los Rojiblancos for the title.

Erik Lamela has been an inspired signing, and we knew, especially Madridistas who remember him at Huesca last season, that Rafa Mir was a steal. Sevilla will be weakened without star striker Youssef En-Nesyri, but this team is so deep that they can withstand his loss.

The way they play, they can make things very difficult for Real Madrid defensively. Jules Kounde remains one of the best young central defenders around, and Bono is building on his breakout 2020-2021 campaign with another outstanding season. This team has a lot of quality at all levels, and they have the best defense in the league.

1. Real Sociedad, Dec. 4

But the toughest matchup for Real Madrid will be against Real Sociedad at the Anoeta Stadium. The Basque club has always played Los Blancos tough over the past couple of seasons, even knocking them out of the 2019-2020 Copa del Rey behind a jaw-dropping performance from Alexander Isak.

The Swedish striker is having a productive season in front of goal and will be a danger to Real. Meanwhile, Mikel Oyarzabal has six goals and remains one of La Liga’s top players. Right now, only Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior might be better.

However, what makes La Real so dangerous is their defensive record. No matter who is in goal, Alex Remiro and Mat Ryan are getting it done. The defense is racking up clean sheets, showing marked improvement after being a weak link last season. Only Sevilla and Athletic Club have allowed fewer goals than Imanol Alguacil’s side, though La Real have also played one more match.

Currently in first place, Real Sociedad took points off Real Madrid both times last season. Though Los Blancos have a game in hand and are still the favorites, a road trip to the Anoeta could yield no points this season. La Real are for real as title contenders.
