The Contenders

It has to be said – Real Madrid’s contenders for the league title simply aren’t at their best this season. Atletico Madrid, currently the holders, have had a bit of a confusing campaign. They’re good – very good even – but they are finding trouble translating the tactics on the pitch as they find themselves hoping for last-minute winners to get all three points in their matches. Things could improve for them and with only four points separating them from Real Madrid, anything can happen with more than half the season to go.

Another consistent contender for the title is Barcelona who’s off-pitch chaos has found itself creating issues on the pitch as well. As they aim to fight through the mess left by the previous board, they know that this is truly a transitional season for them and that even though they will do their very best to fight and make it to the top, it’s going to be extremely difficult. Currently in ninth place and ten points away from Real Madrid, making it back isn’t impossible but it’s very improbable. However, they are slowly fixing the issues and have recently appointed club legend Xavi to manage the team that they have, which is quite strong on paper. Add to that the return of Dani Alves who is probably there more as motivation than being expected to be the player that he once was and they will almost certainly get better. How much better? Only time will tell.

At the moment, Real Madrid’s true contenders lie in the Basque region as Real Sociedad have continued their upward trajectory over the past few seasons to become genuine top-four contenders, and this season, it looks like they’re going as far as fighting for the title and rightly so.

They have managed the team insanely well and have realized that the way up isn’t by only buying some of the best players in the world but rather by putting money where needed for exceptional talent while raising your current players and letting them make a name for themselves in the team. Real Sociedad are now in first place and one point ahead of Real Madrid, but they have played one more game. It’s going to be very interesting to see how the season progresses for them.
