Real Madrid under new boss Carlo Ancelotti has been exceeding all expectations fans would have had at the start of the season. The departure of both Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane in the same window made the project at central defense a priority. And, it is safe to say Real has found its mainstay and the squad overall has looked like one that can win titles.

As we approach the final remaining fixtures of 2021, there definitely were a few key performers who stood out among the pool. Here are the five most important players as we quickly approach the start of the New Year and the upcoming business end of season 2021-22.

5. CB Eder Militao / David Alaba

Much like they appear on the pitch, Real Madrid’s central defensive pairing makes into this list as a pair. There is just no way to separate these two, they have complemented each other’s play and inspired each other’s play to some extent as well. They have also been covering for each other’s mistakes. To be fair, placing one above the other wouldn’t have been the right thing to do given that they have been equal parts of the partnership at the back for Real.

Eder Militao shines in the air and his closing in speed, marking of runs, etc. have been an absolute lifesaver for Real’s defense. David Alaba’s weakest link in play is his aerial prowess and Militao has been stepping up to cover that aspect of his play. It also seems like Alaba’s attacking runs have inspired Militao to try his luck as well. We saw similar runs in the last matches from the Brazilian. Moreover, he is doing his best to aid in the attack. He has been a threat from corners although he needs to work on his accuracy.

David Alaba on the other hand has been a true leader for the back-line. There is no doubt in my mind that he has been the best summer signing in LaLiga this season. He has quickly filled in the role that was vacated by the departure of former captain, Sergio Ramos and so far he has done a great job. His pin-point crossing, long shooting abilities, defensive stability, and brilliant decision-making have all been great assets to this Real Madrid team.

Needless to say, these two have been instrumental for Real’s season so far and deserve to have a spot on this list.
