ON WHAT BASIS DOES MARCO ASENSIO DESERVE A CONTRACT EXTENSION?

At a club like Real Madrid, every player needs to prove that they are worth a contract extension. We witnessed that last season when Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez fought until the very last minute for their extensions.

Furthermore, to prove my point, Sergio Ramos, the greatest centre-back in the club’s history, was not warranted a two-year contract because of his injuries. Despite being the best defender in the modern game, Ramos was not given the contract he desired and ultimately left the club as a free agent.

In that case, what has Marco Asensio exactly done to be awarded a contract extension? The 25-year-old is tied down until the summer of 2023 but the club seems to be keen on extending his stay further.

For the last three or four years, Asensio has been more or less invisible for Real Madrid. He’s been extremely inconsistent with his performances and was one of the most disappointing players last season.

Even this term, he’s not done anything great yet. While his performance against Granda was impressive, there was nothing to write home about his performances against Rayo Vallenco, Elche, Osasuna and Villarreal in La Liga.

Having an impact in a one-off game is not enough to be warranted an extension at Real Madrid. If we look at his performances from last season in La Liga.

Marco Asensio’s averaged  0.24 goals and 0.10 assists per 90 minutes in the league. While he did not have much of an impact on the scoreline, Asensio did not even threaten opposition defences by dribbling or creating chances. He would average only 1.78 key passes per game along with 1 successful dribble. All stats from FBref.

Even this season, Asensio averages 1.67 key passes, 0 through balls, 0.50 goal creation actions and 1.33 successful dribbles per 90. These statistics simply prove that he’s far from being anything close to exceptional. He’s still quite inconsistent and needs to do a lot more to prove that he deserves that proposed contract extension.
