Real Madrid: 3 superstars Florentino Perez must regret not signing
By Sudhir Salvi
PAOLO MALDINI
One of the major drawbacks about the Real Madrid team of galacticos early on in the 21st century was that there were too many offensive weapons but the defence always remained shaky barring the experienced likes of Fernando Hierro and Roberto Carlos. A player of Paolo Maldini’s stature would have been perfect to bring that kind of stability at the back and Madrid even made an offer.
The Italian World Cup winner revealed that he would only have left AC Milan for Real Madrid- such was the pull of the Club Of The Century since over a decade. Maldini is perhaps the world’s greatest defender and modern-day players like Sergio Ramos and Carles Puyol have been mentioned in the same lines as him too, so his signing would have probably made Madrid more successful and there is a chance that they may have more than 13 Champions Leagues now.
Unfortunately, Madrid made the offer too late for Maldini to consider leaving his childhood home, San Siro, and from thereon, the focus never returned to signing him. Florentino Perez has already pulled off several masterstrokes in the transfer markets in the 21st century, but Maldini’s signing would have ensured the Madrid president fished the biggest of fish in the ocean.
