Real Madrid linked to Liverpool CB Joe Gomez

Joe Gomez was once a regular starter for Liverpool, but the astute summer signing of Ibrahima Konate has meant that the England defender is well and truly a backup for the Reds. Yet that has not stopped him from being linked to a big move away from the club.

BBC Sport’s Simon Stone reports that Real Madrid have interest in the 24-year-old center back, who has been held back by injuries.

Los Blancos will be in the market for a center back, with their top target clearly being Antonio Rudiger of Chelsea. A free agent like 2021 summer signing David Alaba, Rudiger is not on the same page with the Blues in contract negotiations, and the Merengue club are favorites to sign the German international.

So the Gomez rumors are a bit out of left field. If Real want a young center back, the more versatile -and, quite frankly, better – Jules Kounde of Sevilla seems a better option. Gomez, as Stone notes, has three years left on his deal after this season, and Liverpool are not known for selling cheap, even if the man is now a secondary option to the powerful Konate.

Although Gomez is a good player, is he Real Madrid quality? Would he be willing to be a third or fourth option for the Merengue club? And would a team that already has to deal with injury question marks to key players like Dani Carvajal be interested in someone who has missed significant time since the start of 2020-2021?

Gomez is worth monitoring. But he is probably not one for Real. It would not be a surprise if, like Sarabia, he is using the press to angle for interested clubs to queue up.
