A wise decision that we are thankful Real Madrid made

Real Madrid, in the past few years, have made some rather dodgy transfer decisions – there’s quite a few of them actually – but they’ve actually made a bunch of really good transfers as well. I mean, everyone was thinking about whether Vinicius Jr was worth the money that went into his transfer. After all, the man was 17 years old and Real Madrid spent 40 million euros on him, of course, people criticised the move.

And to be honest, this article could well be about that decision. The gamble has paid off, Vinicius Jr, just at 21 years of age, has turned into a superstar. What he’s accomplished already is exemplary, and I just know that he will continue to get better and slowly turn into the best in his position.

But this article is not about him.

Real Madrid’s decision of not letting Eder Militao leave was very, very wise

On March 14, 2019, Real Madrid announced the signing of highly coveted centre-back Eder Militao. Basically, almost every team in Europe that needed a high-quality centre-back was out for his signature, and Real Madrid secured his signing – Zidane’s first in his second managerial stint at the club – for 50 million euros, making him the then fifth most expensive centre-back ever. There were a lot of expectations set because of the price tag, and I’ll tell you one thing: He’s meeting and surpassing each and every one of those expectations right now.

Militao might genuinely make the case for the most in-form centre-back in Europe right now. The man’s giving in near 10/10 performances every single game, and it’s really hard to not like him and be proud of what he’s accomplished.

The decision of keeping every team away from the Brazilian has got to be something that Real Madrid, as an institution, would be proud of right now.

Last January, there were reports about Jose Mourinho and Tottenham Hotspur being interested in signing Eder Militao, and that Real Madrid would be open to selling him if a good enough offer came their way. Spurs were also interested in signing him in the summer of 2020 but, talks didn’t pan out the way they wanted.

Well, if that was the case in January, then Real Madrid made the correct choice, by far. This is because a few months later, Militao gave in a bunch of incredible performances when both Ramos and Varane were injured, and that made the case for him eventually becoming a starter for the club.

Real Madrid already knew that he had the talent to succeed at Real Madrid, and what they found out about in that phase was his resilience, his level of patience, his leadership and his state of mind that allowed him to always be ready whenever an opportunity came his way.

At that time, everyone was thinking that he hasn’t really played much, but the reality is that he’s always been the go-to guy for when one of Ramos or Varane (or both) leaves, and well, the club stood its ground and now is looking at Militao in awe, proud of the player he has become and I really doubt he’s going anywhere for the next few years at the very least.

During a time when everyone was talking about De Ligt, Real Madrid put their faith in Eder Militao and he’s paying it back, and will continue to do so for a while. The Brazilian deserves all the credit he’s getting, even though he’s not getting nearly enough of it.
