Premier League giants Liverpool are expected to go after a top forward in the summer 2022 transfer market as they continue to think about the future after their legendary trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane. While they could have an outside shot at signing Real Madrid target Erling Haaland, it is more likely the Reds go after a less pricy option for their wage bill. Haaland could cost a total of 400 million euros when factoring wages and bonuses.

As such, Liverpool have reportedly turned their attention to a current Real Madrid forward, youngster Rodrygo Goes. They actually tried to sign him when he was at Santos, but, like Vinicius Junior who chose Real over Barcelona, Rodrygo could only think of the White House. And now, about three years later, Jurgen Klopp is apparently prioritizing Rodrygo.

The rumors linking Rodrygo to Real Madrid aren’t hugely reliable, but where there is smoke, there is fire. It would not be a surprise for the Reds to go hard after the winger in the summer 2022 transfer window, and they may think they have a chance if Real sign Kylian Mbappe. Rodrygo already isn’t an every-game starter for Los Blancos, and he is finding it impossible to play in his preferred position on the left-hand side. At Liverpool, he could get more minutes rotating for Mane than he would at Real, where Vinicius Junior is the new superstar in town.

Liverpool fans should monitor Rodrygo, but they should not get their hopes up. Los Blancos rebuffed any transfer interest in the young winger last summer, and they are more interested in extending him than selling.

Real Madrid want to renew Rodrygo Goes, not sell him

In fact, noted football insider Fabrizio Romano specifically addressed the Rodrygo transfer rumors to Liverpool on the Here We Go podcast.

Romano says that Real Madrid informed him they want to keep Rodrygo. They are “very happy” with the Brazilian and “never” want to sell him. And they have indeed informed the player’s camp that they will renew him.

Now, things can always change in football over a few months, especially with Real in such hot pursuit of Mbappe and Erling Haaland. That said, the way Rodrygo plays, he can always have a place in the team as a rotational piece, though everyone knows he has the upside for so much more on the left side.

At this juncture, Madridistas should not worry about the rumors of an exit to Anfield. It is not an impossible scenario, but Real hold all the cards here. If a renewal is signed, Rodrygo is 100 percent off the table. Real do not keep players against their will, as we saw with Martin Odegaard, but there is also every indication Rodrygo loves it in Madrid.

So to summarize, Real want to renew Rodrygo. They do not want to sell. Barring a change in outlook from Rodrygo, which would be surprising, Liverpool will have to focus on other transfer targets. The Reds have plenty of options and plenty of pulling power in the transfer market, so they will surely strike gold again, much like they did with Mane and Salah on the wings years ago.
