LB Miguel Gutierrez

From loanees to prospects, we transition to left back Miguel Gutierrez, who began the season as a regular for Real Madrid with Ferland Mendy injured. Mendy’s return has meant Miguel is now obsolete to Carlo Ancelotti’s plans as a starter in the Madrid XI, but we all saw that the Castilla product was indeed a starting-caliber player for Los Blancos. Hell, he was probably the best player on the pitch in a narrow win over Real Betis, who now sit third in LaLiga.

Miguel first burst onto the scene to finish the 2020-2021 season when Mendy initially suffered the overload injury. He quickly proved to be a more reliable option than Marcelo, as he could offer more defensive cover while still being an excellent attacking option. Miguel is very advanced for his age as a passer. Taking into account Marcelo’s loss of speed, Miguel may be Real’s best creator from the left-hand side, assuming David Alaba is immovable from center back.

Though it may seem like Ancelotti soured on the young Spanish fullback, the reality is likely more complex and tactical. There will be a time when Miguel is called upon again, including perhaps in the upcoming Copa del Rey fixtures. Miguel is very much a part of Real Madrid’s future. Why else would the club have sold Sergio Reguilon to Tottenham in 2020 after an excellent season in LaLiga (and as a Europa League champion) with Julen Lopetegui’s Sevilla?

Miguel was a bit of a breakout star in 2021. So for 2022, it may just be a matter of playing time that determines if he is a bigger breakout star. The talent is most definitely there.
