OVERLOAD THE MIDFIELD AND WIN THE BALL HIGHER UP

Barcelona don’t have too bad a midfield in all honesty but they still cannot offer much competition to Casemiro, Luka Modric, and Toni Kroos when they are playing in tandem. Real Madrid’s gala midfield has been next to unstoppable in recent months and the Whites owe a lot of their recent success to the midfielders running the game. They could do with more assistance on Wednesday.

Barcelona are a team that plays with possession inherently and so they are likely to pass the ball around in midfield and try to find spaces. By asking Marco Asensio to drop slightly deeper and playing fluid formations between three and four-man midfields, Real will be able to easily nullify Barca’s threats, particularly because none of their attackers are great in creating from deep.

It is also very important for Real Madrid to make sure that the likes of Modric and Kroos are given adequate support while distributing the ball. In some of the recent draws, there has been less activity on the flanks which has resulted in forward plays becoming stagnant, and the team’s two key passers having to play the ball around without increasing the game’s pace to their benefit.

Later on in the game, it will be important to bring on Federico Valverde and perhaps Eduardo Camavinga too in order to attain more stability while defending should Los Merengues have a slender lead. Barca will throw a lot of players forward in such a case and conceding late goals and giving the opponents a sniff of getting back into the game is something Madrid have done recently.
