Disadvantages of not signing a new centre-back

As I’ve discussed in the previous slide, there are issues regarding Nacho and Vallejo, but signing a new defender might not be the only solution. But Real Madrid can’t afford to overlook that problem, because one injury to any of Alaba or Militao is enough to increase the pressure on both the players to perform, and the club, who will be questioned for their decision to not sign a new centre-back. But still, as I have said, there’s no need to believe that a new signing is the only solution.

But I find a problem in the rumours that the club belives that signing a new centre back isn’t needed because Alaba and MIlitao have been good. Alaba and Militao have been very good, but it is still early to jump into conclusions. I mean no disrespect to any of them, who have been rock solid this season, but I have my own doubts which makes me believe that the decision to not sign a new CB might be a wrong one.

We have been an attacking team this season, and it did take some time for Real Madrid to find the defensive solidity. The defensive stats from the past two months have been encouraging, but it doesn’t provide us with enough sample space to judge Alaba and Militao completely. We have to wait for the season to finish, to come to a conclusion. And not to forget that we haven’t seen our team play against top attacking sides like Manchester City, Bayern Munich or Paris Saint Germain yet.

And I still have some questions regarding Alaba’s continuity as a centre-back. He has been a great CB this season, and I have loved his ball-playing skills and leadership skills. But he has been committing minor mistakes from time to time, which have been rightly overshadowed by his overall good performances. I believe he can be an even better player from the left-back position. Maybe my views on Alaba might not be received well by everyone, but these things aren’t discussed usually when a team or a player is playing well.

I do not want to state that we need to sign a new centre-back because of Alaba’s mistakes, who is a human as well. But we shouldn’t be jumping to conclusions that we have a centre-back duo that is set to rule for the next few years and no signings are needed. We need to just wait and watch, because that early decision we are making might prove to be costly in the end.

I don’t think we should sign an experienced CB like Rudiger, but it is better if the club finds another Militao. By saying another Militao I don’t mean a player having a similar skill-set, but instead a young and talented defender who is willing to be a backup and wait for his chance. It is never a bad thing to make the contingent stronger by adding some new and talented names.
