Ranking the top five left back options for Real Madrid in 2022/23
1. Ferland Mendy
It is obvious to see Ferland Mendy’s name on the top of the list, and he will be the club’s first-choice for sure next season and many more seasons to come. Ever since the Frenchman’s 48 million euro move to Real Madrid, he has been a brilliant player for the club and has established himself as the club’s primary left-back.
He was signed with the intention of solidifying Real Madrid’s left-flank which leaked a lot of goals in the previous seasons, and he has done his job well so far, being a defensive full-back. He uses his physical attributes to perfection, and he is practically unbeatable in 1v1 situations. But his attacking game, particularly his passing and crossing aren’t his best skills, and he has just 6 assists in three seasons at Real Madrid. He has clearly fulfilled what the club expected from him but as a fan of the club’s attacking football, I would love to see better-attacking displays from the 26-year-old.
But we have to give credit where it’s due, and Mendy’s attacking game has improved this season. He has assisted two of Karim Benzema’s goals with cutbacks, and I expect to see him doing a lot more of this in the coming months. I also expect to see him maintain his fitness for the upcoming season, because he has missed a handful of games this season due to injuries, and that has been one of the reasons behind the speculation of Real Madrid looking to sign a quality second-choice left-back.
