Whenever there is a managerial crisis at Real Madrid, we get to hear some names like Joachim Low, the name of the club’s saviour Zinedine Zidane, Arsene Wenger and so on, as the rumoured next manager of Real Madrid. One such name which is often heard is Mauricio Pochettino, who has been linked a lot to the club in the past.

According to a report from L’Equipe, via GetFootballNewsFrance.com, Real Madrid have tried to approach the Argentine manager as many as three times in the past. The report states that Florentino Perez saw Pochettino as the best option twice before this season, once each during the tough times in Zidane’s two managerial terms at Madrid, and also after Zidane left the club in the summer of 2021.

The report also mentions that Real Madrid might look to get the current PSG manager again if Carlo Ancelotti fails to meet his targets this season. That is, if Real Madrid goes trophyless this season, in simple words.

Well, Pochettino made a name for himself with his managerial stints at Espanyol and Southampton and made his case for a top manager with his managerial term at Tottenham Hotspur. He didn’t win a trophy but did enough to please the Spurs management and fans. That made the club see him as a potential Real Madrid manager, but they shouldn’t even consider him as an option in the future.

Pochettino is failing his first big test at a big club

I don’t mean to say that Spurs isn’t a big club, but PSG is a bigger club, in terms of the stature of the players who play for the clubs. In Paris, Pochettino has failed horribly so far, and there have been multiple occasions where Pochettino was on the brink of a sack.

He won Trophee des Champions and a Coupe de France title with PSG last season but lost the Ligue 1 title, a trophy they are expected to win every year, to Lille by one point, And he couldn’t take PSG past the semi-finals of the 2020/21 Champions League season, a competition that PSG is aspiring to win. This season PSG might be leading the league title race, but they’ve been knocked out of Coupe de France, and their Champions League fate will depend on the outcome of the round of 16 tie against Real Madrid. So far, his performance can be labelled as a failure.

On the field, PSG doesn’t look like a team at all and rather look like a group of individuals with massive egos who have no chemistry with each other. This ultimately comes down to the inability of Pochettino to rub his tactics on a set of players with massive egos and raises serious questions about his man-management skills. Pochettino did better with a younger group at Spurs, but at PSG his flaws have been exposed badly.

At Real Madrid, there will be even bigger egos both on and off the pitch, and a Real Madrid manager needs to be mentally stronger, accountable, and be able to remind everyone that he’s the boss. And after looking at his PSG stint, we can definitely arrive at the conclusion that he isn’t made for Real Madrid, and the club shouldn’t go for him another time.
